We’ve heard a lot of people raving about these new noise cancelling headphones from the guys at Goldring, so we thought we’d better get a pair to try out and of course bring you a full review, here’s the lowdown:

The Good

For a start the NS1000’s come with their own case, which is a sturdy oval design with a matt black nylon finish with the usual smart “Goldring” badge on the front. Inside is a soft velvet interior with a snug support to hold the headphones securely and on the other side is a compartment that contains the supplied AAA Energizer battery, gold plated 6.35mm stereo adaptor, gold plated airline stereo adaptor and a gold plated 3.5mm cable.

The NS1000 itself is finished in black and are a classy, understated design. The headband is nicely padded with a “Goldring NS-1000″ emblem emblazened on it, looking further down and the headphone cups, that can be rotated through 90 degrees from the headband, have a “G” emblem finished in shiny silver on them. It is also possible to adjust both sides by movng them up notches, allowing you to find that perfect fit.

Placed on the left ear is a switch to turn on and off the noise cancelling with a small blue LED to indicate which state it’s in, also on the left is the attachment for the 3.5mm cable. While the right hand cup houses the battery, which is much better than having a seperate battery compartment such as those you find on cheap headphones. The whole ensemble including the case it comes in screams of quality.

We tested the sound quality of these headphones in a variety of different circumstances, just normally in the office, in the car and even on the tube and in short they where excellent, easily on par with the pricier Bose QC3’s.

Even without the noise cancelling feature turned on they managed to cut down background noise significantly thanks to the design of the cups that fit over the ear and not on it. But once it is activated it’s like slipping into another world where background noise is elegantly brushed aside, traffic noise, the rumble of a train and air conditioning units are instantly a forgotten memory.

Voices and mid-range frequencies are crisp and clear and music is dynamic and balanced having none of the down sides usually associated with noise cancelling. Bass and treble are both excellent whether the noise cancelling is activated or not.

Comfort is another factor that Goldring have got spot on, both cups are heavily padded and extremely comfortable to wear, as mentioned before they fit over the ear as opposed to on it and because of this there’s no discomfort when wearing for extended periods, we tested them for a good 7 hours straight and they were a joy.

The battery life is also fantastic, working for a good 40 hours before it needs changing, which is more than enough for anyone.

The Bad

In all honesty the Goldring NS1000’s were so good and so comfortable to wear that we have had a hard time trying to see any bad side to them, their overall look may not be to everyones tastes but their performance far outweighs this.

Conclusion

For the money you will not find a better pair of noise cancelling headphones, performance is easily on par with the Bose QC3’s. The represent outstanding value for money and we whole heartedly recommend them, even if you only have a passing interest in noise cancelling headphones then these babys should be at the top of the list.

HP have come up with an offering that is ideal for both the home and the small office users. It’s easy to setup, reliable and can even print without a PC.

There is some easy to install software and an intuitive control panel which makes controlling the printer easy as 1-2-3. Photo printing is easy as well giving great options for printing photos and managing the quality and size. The HP is quite clever too to avoid cropping photos in vital areas. The HP Photo Print Gadget lets you drag and drop photos to the printer to print.

The Good
This printer is easy to use and very suitable for the home and those wishing to have an all round printer, copier and scanner and to reproduce those family snaps in high quality.

The Bad
Some have reported the wireless to be quite tricky to setup, however we didn’t have any problems.

Conclusion
A good all round printer for its value. Good quality printing and easy to use once setup.

Nintendo DSi XL

When we first heard about Nintendo’s new DSi Xl we thought they must have been going mad, taking a backwards step by releasing a larger console while the rest of the world are going smaller. Those thoughts soon shot out of the window though when we actually got our grubby mitts on one to test.

The Good

The first thing we noticed was return of the glossy finish on the top of the console, even if it does make it a little more fingerprint prone than the matt finish of the DSi, it certainly looks sleek. While underneath the XL is a rough, matt finish that provides greater grip than any of it’s predecessors.

Flipping back the DSi XL’s lid reveals it’s jewel in the crown, two huge bright screens which set to bed any fears we had about the XL. The sheer difference of the 4.2 inch screen when placed side by side with a DSi’s 3.25 inch is striking, the XL was visibly clearer and colours more vivid. Playing New Super Mario Bros on both showed us just how much of a better experience it was on the bigger screens, the larger graphics allowing for more precise movement and timing, there was no comparison between the two. The viewing angle of the screens has also been improved which is great if you ever find yourself sharing a game.

Of course the XL’s bigger frame also allows for a little meatier speakers, it certainly made more racket than it’s little brothers. Even though it is larger Nintendo have kept the d-pad and buttons the same size as the DSi which actually makes for a more comfortable hold, especially if playing for extended periods.

The XL comes packaged with two stylus options, the standard variant which is nearly identical to the DS Lite and Dsi but slightly longer, the other is a stylus that bears an uncanny resemblance to a writing pen, right down to the imitation pocket clip at the top, which was very accurate but maybe a bit bulky for fast paced games.

Software and load up times were identical to the DSi, with it boasting the same menu system and functions. The XL also comes with pre-loaded titles titles including Dr Kawashima’s Little Bit of Brain Training: Art Edition and Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function. The XL has a lot of the same features as the DSi, same camera, SD card slot with the ability to download games from the Wi-Fi connection but battery life has been improved, managing to pack a few extra hours in over the DSi.

The Bad

With it’s bigger screens the DSi XL is bigger and chunkier than the DSi and weighs 100g more, because of this it may be borderline whether it’ll fit into the average pocket but it still remains portable.

Conclusion

Bigger is definately better, the screens really set the XL apart, allowing increased detail and accurate touchscreen interaction it really does revitalise older games. The more comfortable grip and louder speakers also really sell it for us. If you are looking to upgrade from an earlier version or a first time buyer you certainly won’t be disappointed by what the XL has to offer.

The Nintendo DSi XL is available for pre-order now and goes on general sale on March 5th, we have heard that stocks are already showing signs of being limited so get in there early!

Spy Verdict
If you are looking for an all rounder phone with some nice special features that includes a great HD camera, MP3 player and a touch screen with an OS that is easily customized then this is a great phone choice to go for. If you are looking for Internet access on the move will then this will be more expensive, Unless you have access to Wifi in hotels, cafes etc. We think this will be a very popular phone for 2010 and you’ll see more HD camera phones coming soon.
